Rail and Sail | R711 Steamrail Victoria Southern Cross Hello all, Today, I have a video of the final Rail and Sail service for the year. As a special, locomotive R711 was rostered to take the train. This video is based in Southern Cross where we see both arrivals and departures. In the morning, R711 arrived on Platform 3 with its 9 carriages, a mixture of steel and wooden carriages. They arrived around 10 minutes later than planned. The return to Southern Cross was a bit more interesting, as you will find out in the video. R711 was formerly owned by the West Coast Railway who, after acquiring the locomotive from a park in Bendigo, converted the locomotive into a 'Super R' to allow the Rs to keep up to the schedule set by the Streamlined diesels. The changes made to the locomotive include a double chimney, oil burning and diesel controls, making it possible to double-head a Westcoaster service with a diesel locomotive on a single crew. The upgrades were intended to return steam operations to the Warrnambool line, beginning with running the Sunday morning 'Westcoaster' service, to bring back what may have been forgotten from a bygone era. After the closure of WCR, R711 was bought back by the Bendigo council and leased to Steamrail for overhaul and operation of the locomotive. R711 is currently the only in-service, oil-burning R class locomotive at the time of uploading this video. 711 is painted in a striking VR blue and gold, representing the livery used by the lost Victorian Railways Streamlined S Class steam locomotives that failed to make it into preservation.
