Double Hudsons Blasts Up the Straight Eureka Express - June 2026 Steamrail R711 & R707 Hello all, Welcome to a Victorian heritage video. Today we head out for the first Eureka Express for 2026. The Eureka Express is one of Steamrail's day trips, running the loop to Ballarat. The DOWN trip takes the train along the old main line to Geelong via Newport. At North Shore, the train travels through the freight line to Ballarat via Lal Lal and the Golden Plains. Upon arriving at their destination of Ballarat, passengers have three hours to relax and explore the former gold mining town. At 3:30PM, passengers jump back aboard the train for a quick dash “Up the Straight”, speeding through Ballan, Bacchus Marsh and Melton. The locomotive for today’s train was Hudson “Super R” R711. The locomotive was recently repainted into a VR Blue & Gold scheme that better matched the heritage coaches. On the return, we were treated to the bonus addition of locomotive R707 which had been stabled in Ballarat East after an operational issue during an earlier Grainlander. This saw the return of double Hudson R class locomotives. In this video we complete a full chase of the train. We start and finish off our transfer clips at Southern Cross Station.
