Gehört der Zölibat abgeschafft? | Sternstunde Religion | SRF Kultur
There are good reasons to forgo mandatory celibacy today without it constituting a break with tradition. This is the opinion of renowned church historian and priest Hubert Wolf. He is therefore calling for an end to the requirement of celibacy. With his statements, Wolf has fueled the controversy surrounding celibacy. This has also been fueled by Pope Francis's proposal to ordain married men into the priesthood in the Amazon region, where there is enormous pastoral need. In Brazil, for example, due to the shortage of priests, Mass can often only be celebrated once a year. Is celibacy to blame? The abuse scandals within the Catholic Church are another reason why calls for the abolition of mandatory celibacy are growing louder again – some are certain that it represents a risk factor. But the debate about celibacy is centuries old. One thing is clear: the lifestyle of clergy is currently under great pressure. Should celibacy be understood as a cornerstone of the Church, or can it be dispensed with without losing tradition? How did celibacy originate, and what does the Bible say? In a conversation with Olivia Röllin, Hubert Wolf examines celibacy in terms of church history.
