Missbrauch in der Kirche: Wer trägt Verantwortung? | Markus Lanz vom 02. Februar 2022
The Church has long been plagued by allegations and accusations of abuse. Now, the reputation of former Pope Joseph Ratzinger is also suffering, as during his tenure as Archbishop of the Diocese of Munich, the priest Peter H. was forcibly transferred from Essen to Ratzinger's district. The reason: Peter H. was accused of abusive behavior toward young boys. He was supposed to begin therapy in the Diocese of Munich and no longer work with young people. "The decision wasn't just about him going to therapy; he was also already being assigned as an assistant chaplain, where he had unrestricted contact with young people." Christiane Florin, editor for religion and society at Deutschlandfunk, criticizes this. Despite the allegations and the therapist's warnings that Peter H. could work as an assistant chaplain, but not with young people, the Church acted wrongly here. But why does this now burden Joseph Ratzinger? Christiane Florin explains that, as archbishop, he is responsible for everything that happens in his diocese. The strict and rigid hierarchy of the Church dictates this. However, Ratzinger has stated that he knew nothing about the allegations against Peter H. According to Ms. Florin's analysis, this cannot be the case. Such events are known about, and they are also discussed within the Church, even in coded language with synonyms and simplified forms. And even if Ratzinger truly knew nothing about them, he was still archbishop and did not carry out his duties properly. "And this whole fragmented reaction that Joseph Ratzinger has now displayed in this report raises the question for me: why doesn't he take a step back and say: I am responsible, I was archbishop." Psychiatrist Manfred Lütz defends Joseph Ratzinger against the accusations that he knew about the circumstances. There is, in fact, no evidence of his knowledge of Peter H. And besides, it is inappropriate for Joseph Ratzinger to remain silent about such acts. During his papal tenure, Ratzinger did much to investigate abuses against young people. Therefore, he also criticizes Christiane Florin and calls for us to wait and see what Ratzinger personally says about the allegations before continuing to philosophize about what he should have known and when.
