Southampton are a very dynamic and fluid team in the way they play - and that has made them very enjoyable to watch in recent times. Whilst it can be seen as a 4-4-2, lots of positions are flexible. During some games, players will drift into other areas and positions as part of a constantly moving shape. In possession, Hassenhuttl's team are very balanced. They are able to play through the thirds both when playing against a high press or a low block. However, they can also put the ball into space in behind for their pacey attackers to run onto. Out of possession, Southapton employ a counter-press after losing the ball in order to win it back quickly. If they fail to do so, then they will regain their shape and form a mid-block.
