The fight for freedom began from the beginning of enslavement, but only in the 19th century did it consolidate in Brazil as a socio-political movement. From the second half of the 19th century, abolitionist campaigns began to proliferate throughout Brazil. Thus, its supporters formed clubs, newspapers, and organized events in support of the cause. Most of these individuals were white and members of the empire's liberal elite, such as Joaquim Nabuco, who saw slavery as an economic and social setback, since such an institution was no longer in effect in Europe. However, many Black abolitionists played an important role in these campaigns. Among the most prominent names are Luís Gama, André Rebouças, José do Patrocínio, Castro Alves, and Maria Firmina.
