Abolition occurred on May 13, 1888. However, this did not represent a major change in the lives of the formerly enslaved, nor the end of racism. Law No. 3,353 of May 13, 1888 became known as the Golden Law. The name serves to highlight the greatness of the new law, which officially abolished slavery throughout the national territory. Despite all the pomp and popularity the legislation enjoyed, becoming known to most Brazilians even today, its text was very short. Containing only two articles, it simply decreed the end of slavery, without guaranteeing any reparations for the Black population that had lived in this situation for over 300 years. Despite this, decreeing the abolition of slavery was enough to definitively weaken the last remaining foundations of the Empire, which fell a little over a year later, on November 15, 1889 – the occasion of the Proclamation of the Republic. In fact, the law was one of the Empire's last attempts to recover some prestige. Princess Isabel signed the text while her father, Emperor Pedro II, was traveling. At its end, the Empire was more popular than ever among the poorest segments of the population. Abolition was already accepted as a matter of time, given the gradual option through previous laws. The abolitionist elite was not concerned with the inclusion of Black individuals. In practice, the abolition of slavery and the end of the Empire changed little in the lives of so-called "ordinary people." The majority of the Black population was already free through other legal mechanisms and through escapes, since the army refused to continue pursuing them. In the countryside, where enslaved labor was more common and widely used, many Black families remained. Since there was no promise of social security, for many it was better to continue working in exchange for shelter and food than to live on the streets of the city. There were farmers who didn't lose a single one of their "former slaves." Learn more about this post-abolition period in Brazil in this lesson with Professor Dudu. Questions?
