The Class 86 locomotive entered service with the Deutsche Reichsbahn (German Reichsbahn) in 1928. A total of 776 units were built, initially operating on the lowlands. They reached a top speed of 80 km/h. The locomotive produced 1030 hp and transferred this power to the rails via its four 1.40-meter-diameter driving wheels. With an axle load of 15 tons, the locomotive was well suited for use on branch lines. Unfortunately, the water supply was relatively limited at only 9 m³, which meant that the operating radius was quite limited, especially when it came to the low mountain ranges. The locomotive 86 744 shown here was built in 1942 by Orenstein & Koppel with the serial number 13759. Acceptance by the Deutsche Reichsbahn took place on October 12, 1942. The first operational depot was Waren an der Müritz. The locomotive remained there until October 11, 1945. Short stays followed, including in Hagenow and Wittenberge. It finally found its first home in Pirna, where it remained until March 2, 1966. After being based in Pirna until March 1966, the locomotive number 86 toured various locations. It then moved to Glauchau, Elsterwerdea, Cottbus, and finally, from July 30, 1972, to December 19, 1973, the Sangerhausen depot. The locomotive number 86 744 was decommissioned from the Sangerhausen depot on December 19, 1973. Just three weeks later, on January 8, 1974, it was sold to the Erfurt Industrial Railway. The locomotive, now designated as Locomotive 2, was used on its factory railway tracks until 1978. It was then decommissioned.
