I’ve been following the growth of Punch-kun at the Ichikawa City Zoo & Botanical Garden. Since I visit frequently, I usually film from the back rather than the front row. I watch Punch-kun through the gaps in the crowd. Of course, if the place is completely empty, I’ll watch from the front row, but otherwise, I stay in the back—even during feeding time. Punch-kun is a Japanese macaque born on July 26, 2025. He began living on the monkey mountain at the Ichikawa City Zoo & Botanical Garden on January 19, 2026. Although he has a mother, she abandoned him—likely due to the summer heat and the fact that it was her first time giving birth. Keepers initially raised him because he couldn't survive on his own, but they decided that keeping him hand-reared forever wouldn't be in his best interest; so, on January 19, 2026, they released him onto the monkey mountain to see how he would fare. When he first arrived, he was bullied by various older monkeys but endured it bravely; watching him grow little by little is truly inspiring and heartwarming. As for the orangutan plush toy Punch-kun carries (nicknamed "Oran-Mama"): Japanese macaques, like humans, grow up being raised by their mothers and experience stress without one. When keepers gave him an IKEA orangutan plushie, he started hugging it. In the past, another monkey did the same thing with a Rilakkuma plushie, seemingly believing it was a mother figure or a friend. However, that monkey (Otome-chan) eventually let go of the toy and became independent around 14 months of age, so Punch-kun might also let go of "Oran-Mama" in a few months. By the way, did you know Otome-chan is also at the same zoo? She became a huge hit worldwide, capturing hearts with her adorable appearance as she cuddled her orangutan plushie.
