When Pathani Devi Ji called Hindu Samman Foundation (HSF) for help, we expected hardship. What we found was far worse. A widow living with her 5 children in a remote corner of Phalodi (Rajasthan), with no home, no income, and no support system. Her husband passed away from blood cancer about a year ago. The family's small savings were exhausted trying to save his life. While they were struggling with medical treatment, they lost their livelihood and were eventually asked to leave the farmer's land where they had been staying. Today, Pathani Devi Ji and her children are living in the veranda of an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere. There are hardly any homes nearby. The room belongs to an acquaintance who is currently away, and the family is hoping he returns and allows them to stay. This is not just the story of one widow. It is a reminder of what happens when a society fails to build strong ground support networks for its vulnerable families.
