Engines of Amtrak - GE E60 [REMAKE]
The Northeast Corridor in the early 1970s was beginning to look rather dated, especially the trains themselves. With most mainline trains relegated to the mechanically unreliable Budd Metroliner EMU's and the nearly 40 year old GG1 electric locomotives, when Amtrak took over most passenger rail in the US in 1971, a change was in order. The railroad had few options as the GG1s were quickly becoming obsolete year by year, a locomotive from Europe would take 3 years for production time, and no locomotive manufacturer in the US offered a new passenger exclusive electric locomotive up to the time in 1973. So, Amtrak once again adapted a freight locomotive for passenger service, that being the General Electric E60C used on the isolated Black Mesa & Lake Powell Railroad. But as was common with most early new Amtrak equipment, problems would soon arise. But despite that, the E60s would soldier on all the way into the 21st century!
