Roland Sandkuhl from Oldenburg is a special kind of train driver. He recently became self-employed and even owns his own locomotive: a one-of-a-kind Class 219 diesel engine. With it, he runs something like his own small charter company. His clients book him for transporting oil, gas, and grain, among other things. Two years ago, Roland acquired the locomotive from a railway company. Before that, it had been out of service for eight years. Roland took out a substantial loan, refurbished it, and since last autumn, at the age of 55, has been his own boss again.
