The Worst Farmers Market Opening Day We’ve Had in Years
Our farmers market opening day did not go the way we hoped. The day started going sideways before the markets even opened with a truck breakdown, and once we got to market, the wind and rain made everything harder. We loaded up for multiple farmers markets with greenhouse tomatoes, basil, maple syrup, and fresh salsa, but cold, rainy weather kept crowds away and sales were down nearly 65–70% across the board. In this video, I show how we load our box trucks for market, the inventory sheets and years of records we use to know what to send, and what happens when opening day does not go according to plan. From forgotten tent weights, condensed setups, wet tents, soaked tablecloths, and bringing home a lot of unsold tomatoes, this was a rough start to the farmers market season. Not every market day is a good one, but farming is all about adapting, learning, and getting ready for the next one.
