The monastery of Chiaravalle is the oldest and most famous in Milan, founded on 22 January 1135 at the express wish of St Bernard, who had passed through Italy to attend the Council of Pisa. The Gothic church was completed in 1221 and a magnificent tower was created in 1340, which has housed what is now the oldest bell in the diocese since 1404. Offerings from the Milanese led to the construction of three cloisters, a majestic church and several places to house the poor and pilgrims. From 1490 some of the greatest artists in history worked inside the church, such as Bramante, Bernardino Luini, the carver Carlo Garavaglia and even Raphael.
