The church dedicated to Saint Zeno, bishop and martyr, first appears in the 10th century, when there was a Lombard-era chapel in Vermezzo. The church was affiliated with the collegiate chapter of canons in Rosate (Italy), from which it gained independence only in the 17th century. The Bishop of Milan found the church in a terrible state, emphasising the need for restoration. In 1597, the church was described as being in good condition, with plastered walls and a new wooden ceiling. The cemetery stood next to the church, whilst the small bell tower was situated above the high altar. In the second half of the 17th century, the parish priest had the new sacristy built and added balustrades to the chancel, extending the church towards the façade. Wars and the arrival of the plague caused such an economic crisis that the work was delayed by 40 years. The Baroque building was completed in 1663 and embellished a century later by Cardinal Pozzobonelli, whose summer residence was in the palace opposite the church. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the old bell tower was restored and raised; for the occasion, the ancient bells were recast into a new set of five, created in 1878 by Barigozzi. Archbishop Ferrari made his first pastoral visit in 1898, consecrating the church a year later. In 1957, work was carried out to install a new underfloor heating system, beneath which the workers discovered the castle’s private medieval chapel. In 1963, the third bell was recast to allow for the addition of three more bells, bringing the set to eight bells in the musical key of D flat. The eight bells in the tower were lowered in 2004 and recast into a new set in the same key as the previous one. The largest bell, still under warranty, was recast the following year, again by the Ecat company, because its sound had been ruined by a crack at the point where the clapper strikes the bell. d' flat - e' flat - f' - g' flat - a' flat - b' flat - c'' - d'' flat The eight bells ring, alternating with the brass band, to announce the procession with the statue of the saint through the streets of the village, which is very well attended by the locals.
