Le campane della Cattedrale di Torino
The church stands in one of the most historically significant locations, just a short walk from the Roman theatre. The arrival of Christianity led to the construction of many sacred buildings, erected on top of pagan palaces or temples. The archaeological site beneath the cathedral reveals the presence of three medieval churches standing side by side, forming the core of the historic complex of the bishop’s buildings. The ancient baptistery was enlarged with the arrival of the Lombards, after Queen Teodolinda had proclaimed John the Baptist as the patron saint of the kingdom. In 1470, the massive bell tower was erected, built next to the façade of the main church. The disproportionate size of the new tower prompted the cardinal to wish to build a new main church, following the demolition of the previous ones. The Duke of Savoy sponsored the construction, which was completed in 1505 in the Renaissance style. The ancient diocese of Turin, established in the 4th century, was elevated to a metropolitan see by Pope Leo X in 1515. The capital was transferred in 1563 from Chambéry (France) to Turin (Italy). In 1578, the Duke of Savoy ordered the transfer of the Holy Shroud to allow the Archbishop of Milan, Carlo Borromeo, to fulfil the vow he had made during the plague epidemic. To better house the shroud of Christ’s death, a new chapel was built, considered one of the finest architectural works in human history. The chapel was set on fire in the spring of 1997, possibly in an attempt to destroy the precious shroud. It took 20 years to restore it, whilst the shroud was saved by the fire brigade. The bell tower was raised in 1720 to a design by the famous architect Filippo Juvarra, with the new Baroque belfry bringing the height to 60 metres. The bell tower, accessible to the public via the museum of sacred art, houses four bells dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The oldest is the largest, cast in 1752. Added to this are the second, cast in the city in 1830, and the other two smaller ones, originating from the hills. The total weight of the bells is 3,110 kg of bronze. (c' sharp) - (e') - f' sharp - (a') I passed through this region and paid a visit as a tourist, to catalogue famous bells that I had never heard ring. A bell rang to announce midday. #foryou #2026 #vlogs #italy #bell #culture #landscape #catholic #cinematic #bells #church #travel #city #trip #museum #cathedral
