The first church in Palazzolo was built in the 5th century as a subsidiary chapel to a main church, from which it became independent in the 11th century. In the 12th century, the Bishop of Brescia ordered the construction of a new central church, incorporating into Palazzolo part of the lands belonging to the ancient large medieval church. By the early 18th century, the ancient church dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary had become too small to accommodate the growing population. The idea of extending the Renaissance church was rejected in 1749, following a negative ruling by the authorities. The new church was built over a period of 14 years, with all the ancient works of art from the old church—which was never demolished—being transferred to its interior. The elegant marble façade heralds a majestic three-nave church, adorned with ten side altars featuring remarkable works of art. At the beginning of the 19th century, the idea arose to build a civic tower to serve as a new bell tower. An architect from Venice suggested using the tower of the famous castle as a base. The belfry was constructed using columns donated by Bergamo in 1812, as the construction of the triumphal arch dedicated to Napoleon had, fortunately, been halted. Construction was completed in 1825 with the installation of the statue of the patron saint, Fedele, bringing the total height to 92 metres: this is the tallest circular tower in Europe. During the Second World War, the government ordered the requisition of the bells. Some residents used their friendship with an army colonel to hide the bells in a country farmhouse. After the war, the parish priest had the new, exceptional set of bells cast, sending the remaining bronze to the D’Adda foundry. A set of twelve bells in the key of A major was cast, weighing 103 quintals.
