During his teaching career, Hu usually wore a traditional Chinese cheongsam. But his thinking was highly Westernized. He introduced science and democracy to peers, and advocated the use of vernacular language, and was one of the era’s most important thinkers. With all his elegance, talent and refinement, he was very popular with ladies. Historians have described how the women who expressed their interest in him were “as many as the stars in the sky.” In writing his diary, Hu used acronyms and pseudonyms to refer to his female companions. But later researchers pieced together the identities of many of these ladies from his journals and letters. In our next segment, we explore the adventures of this Peking University professor, his later appointment as ambassador to the U.S., how he won the esteem of President Roosevelt, and, naturally, his busy love life, which was a well-kept secret at the time.
