After marriage, Chen Chien-jen devoted himself to preparing for the government-funded entrance exams to fulfill his dream of studying abroad. Because only one student was admitted per subject, he took the exams four times before finally going to the United States to pursue his doctorate. After returning to Taiwan, he taught at National Taiwan University, becoming a professor at the age of 35, one of the youngest professors in the medical school.
