When the Communist army surrounded Beijing in 1949, the only two professors evacuated to Nanjing by Chiang Kai-shek were Hu and Tsinghua University president, Mei Yiqi. Hu was one of few intellectuals willing to support Chiang’s regime. In return, he got special treatment. But that led the Communist party to denounce Hu a few years later, launching a “Criticize Hu Shih Thought Movement.” Meanwhile, Hu was in Taiwan, were he was treated as a VIP by Chiang Kai-shek, and was even appointed head of Academia Sinica. Many were shocked when, in 2006, publication of Chiang Kai-shek’s journals revealed that he saw Hu as a thorn in his side, because Hu was always harping on about “freedom” and “democracy.” Chiang called Hu “that shameless leech.” Let’s examine how the generalissimo and Hu got on.
