YOU'LL LOVE IT! Hello, philosophy addicts! I'm Enric, your philosophy teacher on YouTube, and this is Addicted to Philosophy, the channel where we love Plato, Aristotle, and all the great philosophers. Everyone mercilessly criticizes substance dualism, associated with the philosopher René Descartes. According to Cartesian dualism, the human being is a compound of two substances: an immaterial substance (the soul) and a material substance (the body). This philosophical theory has received a host of objections, but the most common is probably the problem of interaction: if soul and body are two such distinct substances, how can they interact with each other? How can the soul, a completely immaterial substance, move the physical particles of the body or brain? I myself have used this criticism in the past against substance dualism. But, although I don't consider myself a dualist in the Cartesian sense, I must say that, over time, the problem of interaction has seemed less and less persuasive as a criticism against it, especially if one wants to take it as a definitive refutation. In this video, we'll delve deeper into this topic than ever before. Buckle up! (An ideal video as an introduction to philosophy, or for A-levels and university entrance exams) 🕘 INDEX: 0:00 - We owe Descartes an apology 1:57 - The problem of interaction versus substance dualism 6:37 - First attempt to resolve the objection 10:24 - Second attempt to resolve the objection 20:36 - Third attempt to resolve the objection 😱 And if you're reading THIS, you're one of the 0.5% of people who read descriptions TO THE END! 👏 Leave me a comment with a lion emoji 🦁 to let me know; if I see a lot, you'll brighten my day! 😄 📚 PRIMARY SOURCES: ► B.
