A while ago, I received a mysterious package with the inscription "The Ultimate Argument Against Materialism." Inside, there was a letter and a calculator... So we begin this video, in which we continue the series on the philosophy of mind and the problem of consciousness, with what is perhaps the greatest challenge to materialism: an argument by philosopher James F. Ross that seeks to conclude that the intellect is an (at least partially) immaterial faculty, not reducible to or identifiable with anything purely material, such as an activity or process in the brain. To do so, Ross relies on a paradox developed by philosopher Saul Kripke, showing that nothing material can have a specific formal (logical-mathematical) structure. But our thinking can (or we would not be able to reason mathematically and logically). Therefore, thinking is a faculty that cannot be completely reduced to matter. It's easier than it sounds, and I'll explain it as simply as possible!
