El Problema de la Conciencia tiene DESESPERADOS a los Filósofos 😵
The Problem of Consciousness is the greatest MYSTERY of our time. I'm Enric, your philosophy teacher on YouTube, and this is Philosophy Addicts. We continue our series on philosophy of mind, delving deeper into the mind-brain problem, or the problem of consciousness. In the previous video, we saw the difficulties (or impossibility) of providing a reductive explanation of consciousness in purely physical terms. According to the argument developed by the atheist philosopher Thomas Nagel in his article "What Is It Like to Be a Bat?", a complete physical description of the brain processes associated with conscious experience will always leave out precisely the subjective dimension. The facts, the truths, of conscious experience simply do not seem to be captureable in the quantitative terms that science has been accustomed to using since Galileo. Consequently, in recent decades it has become common to hear discourses about consciousness that treat it as an emergent phenomenon: a property irreducible to the physical (not identifiable with the electrochemical processes that take place in the brain) but which emerges from matter when it reaches a certain degree of complexity. This is the proposal of emergentism (which could be described as a type of non-reductive materialism or property dualism, if you recall the first video in this series). This time, we approach emergentism from a critical perspective, first presenting its advantages, but also the reasons why many philosophers feel that this position, rather than solving the fundamental problem of consciousness, simply distracts us from thinking about it. So, is consciousness the result of purely physical processes? Or do we need to go further?
