Jehan Georges Vibert: Master Painter & Inventor of the Famous Vibert Medium

Jehan Georges Vibert (1840-1902) was a celebrated French classic painter born in Paris into an artistic family. He became one of France's most renowned Academic genre painters, especially celebrated for his ironic depictions of ecclesiastical life. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, he gained fame for his satirical scenes of clerical life that displayed both technical mastery and sharp wit. Beyond painting, Vibert was an innovative technician who made lasting contributions through his scientific approach to art materials. He developed the famous "Vibert painting varnish" in collaboration with Lefranc & Cie in 1892, creating what became known as Vibert Medium. This slow-setting painting medium continues to be manufactured today, allowing artists to rework colors for extended periods, and remains beloved by painters more than a century after its invention.
