Attar’s nightingale is in love with flowers; a burning, intoxicating, and identity-forming love. He considers himself “drunk,” “crazy,” and “absolutely obliterated,” and he considers his song the language of the secrets of love. His song fills the world and silences other birds, because he believes that the truth of love has ended with him. But right here, Attar’s critique begins. This intoxication, although it looks like annihilation, is in fact a halt in the present, not a reaching of perfection. The nightingale suffers from a kind of spiritual pride: she considers her happiness to be the ultimate goal and even equates her love-song with revelation. The nightingale’s beloved, the flower, is beautiful but mortal. Her beauty “decays in a week.” This point is the key to understanding the allegory. The perfumer takes the flower as a symbol of all the transient beauties and perfections of the world; things that delight the heart but do not last. Love for such a lover, however sincere and passionate, is not enough for spiritual progress. The tragedy of the nightingale’s love lies here: The flower laughs, but this laughter is not for the sake of reunion; “it laughs at you, not in you.” The relationship is one-sided. The nightingale burns, laments, and loses her identity, but the lover does not care. This image is a sharp critique of attachment to the manifestations of the world and even to the non-final spiritual perfections. Attar finally rules: A lover who is content with the “love of flowers” ​​cannot bear the Simorgh. This love is the perfect example of virtual love; a love that, if it does not lead to true love, becomes a veil. The nightingale is not left behind because of the lack of rebellion, but because of the smallness of her beloved.
