“Im Abendrot” (In Evening’s Final Breath) is a work by German composer, Richard Strauss (1864-1949), with a poem by the German romantic poet, Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff (1788-1857). This work was composed in 1948 and is considered Strauss's last work. He, who was 84 years old at that time, died the following year. “Im Abendrot” is part of Strauss's last four songs. It describes man's longing for eternity, and the flight of birds is symbolic of longing to reach eternal and infinite peace.
