“Buye Juye Muliyan” (The Scent of Muliyan’s Stream) is considered one of the most brilliant pieces in the history of Iranian music. The lyrics are a poem by Rudaki and the music was composed by Ruhollah Khaleghi. It was first broadcast in 1965 on an Iranian radio program and performed by Marzieh and Gholam-Hossein Banan. The story behind the creation of this poem, as recounted by Nezami Aruzi - a 12th-century Persian writer - in his book “Chahar Maghale” (Four Discourses), illustrates the profound influence of poetry and music on the human soul. Nezami Aruzi recounts that Nasr Ibn Ahmad II, a ruler of the Samanid dynasty in the 10th century who governed over northeastern Iran, used to escape the summer heat of Bukhara by spending the season in another city. One year, he traveled to Herat and became so enchanted by its beauty and pleasant climate that he refused to return. In his prolonged absence, the courtiers turned to the renowned poet Rudaki, who was close to the ruler, and asked him to help bring the emir back. Rudaki traveled to Herat and performed a poem before the emir while playing the harp. It is said that upon hearing the final verse, the emir became so overwhelmed with longing for Bukhara that he mounted his horse barefoot and rushed back to Bukhara. Oland «بوی جوی مولیان» که به «چنگ رودکی» نیز معروف است «یکی از درخشان‌ترین قطعات تاریخ موسیقی ایران» به شمار می‌رود. شعر این ترانه از رودکی و آهنگ آن اثر روح الله خالقی است. این ترانه برای نخستین بار در سال ۱۳۴۴ با اجرای مرضیه و غلامحسین بنان از برنامه رادیویی گل‌های رنگارنگ (شماره ۲۵۴) پخش شد. داستانی که نظامی عروضی، نویسنده قرن ششم هجری، در کتاب «چهار مقاله» درباره چگونگی آفرینش شعر «بوی جوی مولیان» نوشته بیانگر تاثیر شگرف شعر و موسیقی بر روان انسان است. نظامی عروضی می‌نویسد که نصر بن احمد دوم، از امیران سلسله سامانیان و فرمانروای شمال‌ شرق ایران (قرن چهارم هجری)، معمولا برای فرار از گرمای بخارا، بهار و تابستان را در شهری دیگر می‌گذراند. یک سال که در فصل گرما به هرات رفت آن‌قدر مجذوب آب ‌وهوا و زیبایی‌های این شهر شد که به بخارا بازنگشت. در غیاب طولانی او، درباریان از شاعر نامدار، رودکی، که از نزدیکان امیر بود، خواستند تا او را بازگرداند. رودکی به هرات رفت و در حضور امیر، همراه با نواختن چنگ، شعری خواند. گفته می‌شود که با شنیدن بیت آخر، امیر آن‌چنان دلتنگ بخارا شد که بدون پوشیدن چکمه‌، سوار اسب شد و به‌سوی بخارا شتافت. بوی جوی مولیان آید همی یاد یار مهربان آید همی ریگ آمو و درشتی راه او زیر پایم پرنیان آید همی آب جیحون از نشاط روی دوست خنگ ما را تا میان آید همی ای بخارا شاد باش و دیر زی میر زی تو شادمان آید همی میر ماهست و بخارا آسمان ماه سوی آسمان آید همی میر سروست و بخارا بوستان سرو سوی بوستان آید همی Juye-Muliyan scent drifts my way, As do memories of a kind friend.
