Did Exclusivity Ruin Gaming?

Exclusivity in Gaming. When you hear that you probably think about games like The Last of Us, Pokemon, Halo, and way more. It might be something that gives you a sense of community and pride in the console you play on but for others, it’s viewed as a net negative for being anti-consumer. It’s the way companies are able to create a reason to play on their platform but also creates extreme tribalism which still exists today. The console wars happened and Xbox lost in the most pivotal generation with the Xbox One vs the PlayStation 4. This has led to Xbox backing away from the exclusivity war and possibly bringing games like Starfield and Gears of War to other platforms in the future. This has all led to PlayStation having a massive dominance on the market as they out-competed Microsoft in this console arena. Exclusivity isn’t just in the realms of consoles. We have PC exclusivity with new Ubisoft games being sold only on Ubisoft Connect or Epic Games. This is just the gaming equivalent of the streaming platform battle which we’ve all started to see where that’s led to. So today let’s talk about exclusivity in games, my history with it, the reasons for its existence, the pros and cons but finally, if it’s a business practice that should be stopped.
