12hr Tow Through My Old Stomping Grounds to Boca Grande… Right Into a Fog Bank | Tow 30ft Fisher
The day started as a cool, overcast morning with a slight breeze and some patchy fog, but was supposed to warm up into the low 80s and be mostly sunny. Boy did they mess up that forecast! Soon after I finished breakfast, my dispatcher called saying we had a potential tow coming in, but she was waiting on more details. About 30 min later, she calls me to say it’s a go and is going to be a long one since the guy wants to go as far south as we can while staying within his policy coverage limits. I said ok, let me call the guy and see what the deal is. I call the guy, and he says he’s trying to get to Safe Cove Marina to work on his boat. I tell him that won’t be covered, but I can probably take you to around Boca Grande area and stay within the coverage limits, and there are a few good anchorages down there I can drop you off. He said he’d call some marinas down there and see if he could get a slip while he waited for me, but if not, was fine going to an anchorage if needed. Well, I start on my way to him, and it’s still pretty overcast and cool, but the fog is starting to clear up, so I’m hoping it will be a beautiful day for such a long tow (figuring it was going to be about 11 or so hours round trip). I get to the guy, and he says he called Eldred’s Marina, but was waiting on a call back, so let’s plan on going there and he’ll let me know when he hears back from them. As we start heading south, the weather keeps clearing up, so I’m happy, and by the time we get to my old stomping ground in Venice, the sun is out, and it’s turning into a nice day! Unfortunately, that only lasted a couple of hours, because as soon as we got down to the Tom Adams bridge in Englewood, I could see the fog starting to roll back in from the gulf. I thought no big deal, this will be like it normally is this time of year, where it comes in nice and patchy, and then disappears just as quickly. I was severely mistaken, though, as the fog just kept getting thicker and thicker, and the temperature kept falling. While not the worst fog I’ve ever been in, it was the longest time I’ve ever spent in fog, and by the end of it, I was cold and everything on the boat, including me, was soaked. It's a cool, overcast morning. There's a breeze. There's some patchy fog. But the forecast — the forecast! — promises low 80s, mostly sunny, a genuinely lovely day on the water. I believed it. I put my faith in that little sunshine icon and I went about my morning like a man who has learned nothing from years of living in Florida. Then my dispatcher calls. We've got a tow. Not just any tow — a long one. A "let's see how far south we can get before the guy's policy coverage taps out" kind of tow. The customer wants to get to Safe Cove Marina to work on his boat. I have to break the news to him gently that Safe Cove is a bit of a stretch coverage-wise, but that I can get him down to the Boca Grande area and there are some solid anchorages down there if a marina slip doesn't pan out. He's a reasonable man. He says he'll make some calls. So I start heading out to pick him up, and honestly? Things are looking up. The fog is clearing. I'm thinking: 11-hour round trip, beautiful Gulf Coast scenery, maybe I'll actually get a tan. By the time we hit Venice — my old stomping ground — the sun is fully out and it is, in fact, a gorgeous day. I feel vindicated. The forecast was right. I was right to trust it. Then we reached the Tom Adams Bridge in Englewood. And that's where the day decided it had been too kind to me. What followed was the longest continuous stretch of fog I have ever experienced in my career on the water. Not the thickest fog. Not the most dangerous fog. But relentless, cold, wet, clinging fog that rolled in off the Gulf and just... stayed. For hours. Everything on the boat got soaked — the equipment, the seats, my jacket, my dignity. By the time we finally reached Boca Grande (shoutout to Eldred's Marina for coming through with a slip), I looked like I had been wrung out like a dishcloth and left to air dry. #TowLife #BoatTow #MarineTowing #FloridaBoating #GulfCoast #BocaGrande #EldredsMarina #FloridaLife #BoatingLife #OnTheWater #SeaTow #TowBoat #FloridaFog #VeniceFL #Englewood #BoatLife #MarineServices #WorkingOnTheWater #FloridaWeather #WeatherFail #FoggyDay #CommercialBoating #InshoreBoating #BoatCaptain #TowCaptain #SaltLife #FlatsBoating #CoastalFlorida #DayOnTheWater #RealBoatLife
