Hidden For 32 Million Years! Rockhounding Gems And Crystals At The Dugway Geode Beds

Rockhounding the Dugway Geode beds yielded spectacular geodes of banded agate and jasper filled with quartz crystals of pink, blue, gray and amethysts. Geothermal activity filled rhyolite cavities with steaming water rich in silica and other minerals. These minerals layered into the pockets and cavities of the volcanic rock some 32 million years ago and underwent tremendous heat and pressure. The result is what we find today, buried in mud, hidden in clay packed geodes: spectacular crystals and gems, banded agate and jasper, all exhibiting a rainbow of colors. Rockhounding the Dugway Geode Beds is a must "to do" on a Rockhound's list. For those who have gone before, or may come later, we hope you find this video helpful.
