MEUS FILHOS ME ENSINARAM QUE EU POSSO SER AMADO | Na minha época era assim #03
Dagoberto grew up feeling unloved and unrespected as a gay man, but God gave him a family to show him he was just as worthy of love as anyone else. Dagoberto was an effeminate child and was abused by adult men throughout his childhood. All of these episodes traumatized the boy, who even attempted to take his own life. Feeling that he would never be loved because he was gay, Dago grew up without much hope and without romantic involvement, as physical contact with other men was still very traumatic for him. As soon as he left home, escaping a toxic environment, he followed the path of a young gay man in the 1980s. He went out to clubs, made friends, and had fun, but something caught him by surprise in the late 1980s, when he was 27: HIV. This was a surprise to Dago because HIV was associated with promiscuity and drugs, and he was a fairly straight-laced young man. Based on the "risk" checklist his doctor had prepared for him, Dagoberto had no idea he had contracted the virus. There, he faced a new challenge, because at that time, contracting HIV was practically a death sentence. This didn't happen, but Dagoberto developed AIDS in mid-1997, at the age of 36, because he wasn't using his antiretrovirals correctly. Luckily, a close friend stood by him at that moment and helped him get back on track. And it was truly fortunate, because in 1998, Dagoberto met his current partner, Claudio, and they began a journey of companionship. Having grown up in a traumatic environment and faced death up close, Dagoberto seized the opportunity to have a family and never let it go. In the early 2000s, his partner suggested they adopt a child, and after many failed attempts through "alternative" channels, a social worker advised them to join the adoption waiting list. But imagine? A gay couple adopting a child in the 2000s? But it worked! When Dagoberto and his husband arrived to meet their first child, Lucas, the boy was two years old, unable to walk or talk. As soon as Dagoberto opened his arms to hug him, the child ran toward him. Was it meant to be? After Lucas, the two adopted his biological brother and continued like that for a few years, the four men in the house, until more recently, at almost 60 years old, the opportunity to adopt Kiara arose. When Dagoberto looks back and recaps his entire story, he can't believe that this traumatized boy could create a family filled with love. For him, God put his children on his path precisely to show that the love that didn't exist in childhood and adolescence was stored away, waiting for the right moment to arrive. Dagoberto's story is part of the series "In my time it was like this," featuring five stories of people in the LGBTQIA+ community over 50. The idea is to counterpoint those phrases we sometimes hear, "back in my day, there was none of that," or "back in my day, it wasn't like that."
