Thais can consider herself a very lucky woman. The 74-year-old trans woman is the exception to the rule when we talk about the life expectancy of trans women in the country. Despite being "lucky," she hasn't had such an easy life and has lived (and still lives) on the margins of society. She suffered prejudice even before understanding who she was; she was expelled from her workplace for being a trans woman; she faced the dictatorship; she left the country and faced the world of prostitution. Back in Brazil during the AIDS epidemic, she helped another trans woman, Brenda Lee, care for LGBTQIA+ people who were terminally ill due to the disease. There she discovered her vocation to help others, and since then she has been working in NGOs and government programs to support and counsel trans people, transvestites, lesbians, gays, and bisexuals. Even with all the ups and downs of her seven decades of life, the coordinator of the NGO Grupo Pela VIDDA is proud to have reached where she is today. "To be the human being you are, you have to be fully present. If you hide something—sexuality, affection—you deny it to the world, and the world denies you everything." Thais's story is part of the series "In my time, it WAS like this," featuring five stories from LGBTQIA+ people over 50 years old. The idea is to offer a counterpoint to those phrases we sometimes hear, such as "in my time, none of this existed," or "in my time, it wasn't like this."
