Giftfalle oder Hummelmagnet? Fingerhut im Naturgarten, von Digitalis purpurea bis Digitalis lutea

The foxglove (Digitalis) is an imposing presence in the garden, where its towering flower spikes visually elevate partly shaded areas. Three species are native to Central Europe: the ubiquitous common foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), as well as the large yellow foxglove (Digitalis grandiflora) and the straw foxglove (Digitalis lutea), both of which captivate with softer, yellowish hues. All parts of the plant are undoubtedly highly toxic, as they contain cardiac glycosides such as digitoxin. Consuming even the smallest amounts can lead to severe cardiac arrhythmias, nausea, and, in the worst-case scenario, fatal cardiac arrest, which is why caution is essential when handling it in the garden. For wildlife, especially bumblebees, the plant is an absolute magnet. The bell-shaped flowers are perfectly adapted to the anatomy and strength of bumblebees, which crawl deep into the floral tubes to reach the abundant nectar. In doing so, they use the characteristic spotted patterns inside the blossom as visual guideposts, while the plant's toxins cause no harm whatsoever to the insects themselves.
