The dead-nettles of the genus Lamium are true all-rounders in the natural garden, as they do not only impress with their characteristic labiate flowers but also serve as an extremely valuable food source for bumblebees and wild bees. In contrast to the superficially similar stinging nettle, they possess no stinging hairs, which makes them friendly companions in shady or semi-shady garden areas. Particularly noteworthy is the aesthetic splendor of the Giant Dead-nettle, whose imposing growth and elegant, large blossoms make it a real eye-catcher in the perennial bed. The spectrum of this versatile genus is rounded off by the Red Dead-nettle and the Henbit Dead-nettle, two ecologically significant archaeophytes that established themselves in our Central European regions long ago and already provide valuable accents in early spring.
