Heimische Veilchen im Naturgarten: Verborgene Schönheit - Die schönsten Arten der Gattung Viola

Around Easter, when the violets flowering season (botanically Viola) reaches its peak, many people ask themselves, "Which violets are truly suitable for a wildlife garden and make sense in Central Europe?" In a natural garden, violets are actually far more than just pretty splashes of color – they are a prime example of evolutionary cooperation and occupying ecological niches. The sweet violet (Viola odorata) often leads the way. As a so-called archaeophyte, it has accompanied humankind since antiquity. It thrives in semi-shaded spots under shrubs and captivates not only with its color but, above all, with its intense, sweet fragrance, which can enchant entire sections of the garden. A little later, and often somewhat more subtly, the rough violet (Viola hirta) and the woodland violet (Viola riviniana) join the display. While the rough violet prefers calcareous, drier locations and—as its name suggests—has fine hairs, the woodland violet easily colonizes light woodland edges and shady flowerbeds. The true magic of violets, however, is revealed in their relationship with the animal world: Violets belong to the "ant plants" (myrmecochory). Their seeds possess a small, fat-rich appendage called an elaiosome. Ants carry the seeds to their nests to eat the nutritious appendage and then dispose of the intact seeds in their "garbage pits" or tunnels. In this way, the violets are perfectly fertilized and spread throughout the garden. For many endangered fritillary butterfly species, wild violets are simply vital. The females often lay their eggs directly on or near the plants, as the caterpillars depend on the violet leaves as their sole food source. Without the wild violet, there would be no butterfly.
