Dr. Linus Kosambo on Sustainable Aquaculture through IMTA Systems

Dr. Linus Kosambo, Co-Principal Investigator from the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI), shares his experience supporting the Blue Empowerment Project through technological innovation and research. He highlights his work on developing and promoting Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) systems, which combine fish farming with seaweed cultivation to create sustainable, climate-smart livelihoods for coastal communities in Kwale and Kilifi counties. Dr. Kosambo explains how IMTA technology enhances income generation, diversifies livelihoods and strengthens resilience against climate change. He also emphasizes the importance of ensuring that these technologies are accessible, scalable and sustainable, so that communities in the fishing space can adopt them successfully over the long term. Additionally, he shares how the system is designed in order to address the gender equity challenge noted prior to the project implementation. His insights highlight how innovation and practical technology can work together to create sustainable, gender-inclusive economic opportunities as well as show how science, research and community engagement can come together to strengthen the blue economy and improve the livelihoods of coastal communities.
