Dr. Catherine Kilelu on Policy and Governance for Sustainable Coastal Aquaculture

Dr. Catherine Kilelu highlights the project’s work in aligning national and regional fisheries, gender equality and climate resilience policies with the needs of coastal communities in Kwale and Kilifi counties. Dr. Kilelu explains how the project has identified policy gaps that previously limited women’s participation in fisheries and aquaculture. Through visits to county governments and the Council of Governors, the project has engaged with various actors to demonstrate the benefits of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA), an approach that combines fish and seaweed farming in a sustainable, mutually beneficial system. She emphasizes the importance of bridging the gap between policy and practice, showing how supportive governance frameworks can help women access resources, participate in decision-making and adopt climate-smart aquaculture methods.
