In November 1944, after the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Japanese heavy cruiser Nachi was at Manila while American carrier forces struck across the Philippines to cut Japanese air and naval movement around Luzon. Vice Admiral Kiyohide Shima had brought Nachi through the fighting around Surigao Strait, but the ship was now exposed inside a harbour increasingly threatened by aircraft from Task Force 38...
