Admiral Angelo Iachino led a powerful force built around the battleship Vittorio Veneto, heavy cruisers, and destroyers, while Admiral Andrew Cunningham sortied from Alexandria with battleships, the carrier Formidable, cruisers, and destroyers to intercept before the Italians could disrupt British traffic in the eastern Mediterranean...
