When Germans Left Him for Dead, He Killed 200 of Them in 48 Hours
#ww2history #militaryhistory #ww2 In September 1944, near Scarperia, Italy, Private First Class Oscar G. Johnson was ordered to protect the exposed left flank of Company B during the push against Germany’s Gothic Line. Then everything collapsed around him. German counterattacks, artillery, mortars, and machine-gun fire killed or wounded every man in his squad, leaving Johnson alone in a shallow position with enemy troops closing in. Instead of falling back, he gathered weapons and ammunition from his fallen comrades and held the flank by himself. All night, German soldiers tried to infiltrate his position. Johnson stayed awake, firing rifles, throwing grenades, and stopping each attack before it could roll up the American line. By the time his company was relieved, dozens of Germans had been killed or captured—and one soldier had held a position meant for an entire squad.
