When Japanese Cut Off This American's Ear — He Killed All 41 of Them in 36 Minutes

#ww2records #ww2history #wwii Why one American private woke up to a sword strike in his tent—and became a one-man army on Luzon. May 11, 1945. Near Dingalan Bay, Private John R. McKinney had just finished a long shift at a machine-gun position when Japanese soldiers slipped through the perimeter before dawn. One attacker struck him with a saber, leaving him dazed and bleeding. McKinney grabbed his rifle and fought back. When Japanese troops captured the machine-gun position and tried to turn it against the American line, McKinney charged into the emplacement alone. He shot enemies at point-blank range, clubbed others with his rifle, changed positions under fire, gathered more ammunition, and kept fighting as grenades and mortar shells exploded around him. By the time help arrived, McKinney had stopped the assault and saved his company from possible destruction.
