January 8, 1945. Near Kaysersberg, France, Dunham’s platoon was pinned at the bottom of snow-covered Hill 616. German machine guns fired from fortified positions above them while artillery exploded behind the Americans, leaving almost no safe route forward. Every tactical instinct said to remain under cover and wait for support. Dunham went uphill alone. Wearing a white mattress cover as improvised snow camouflage, he carried twelve carbine magazines and twelve hand grenades. He crawled toward the first emplacement through intense fire. Ten yards from the position, a German bullet tore a ten-inch wound across his back and sent him rolling down the slope. He stood up and charged again. Dunham kicked away a grenade that landed beside him, killed the first gun crew, and moved toward the second position while blood soaked through his white camouflage. Grenades destroyed the next emplacement. He then advanced on the third machine gun, crossed open ground under direct fire, and eliminated its crew at close range. By the end of the assault, Dunham had destroyed three machine-gun positions, killed nine German soldiers, wounded seven, and captured two. His one-man attack broke the defensive line and allowed his platoon to continue advancing. The soldier who turned himself into a “walking grenade” received the Medal of Honor for one of the most extraordinary infantry assaults of World War II.
