U.S. Sugar 148 - Florida Steam Photo Charter

It felt more like 1962 than 2026 in Clewiston, Florida, this January, when U.S. Sugar No. 148 was returned to its vintage sugar-hauling appearance for a two-day photo charter. In service on the Sugar Express since 2020, this event marked the 1920-built locomotive's third photo charter. It was charged with sugar cane cars one day and a matching passenger train the next, and as an added bonus for steam fans, the 148 was specially equipped with the hooter whistle from the legendary Norfolk & Western No. 1218. Thanks to the crews of U.S. Sugar and FMW Solutions, the 148 gave a thrilling performance through the cane fields at speeds up to 40 mph.
