In this lesson, I’ll show you one of the most important chord shapes in rock music: power chords. If your guitar playing feels a little too “singer-songwriter” and you’re ready for a bigger, punchier rock sound, power chords are the key. I’ll walk you through what power chords are, why they work, and how to play them anywhere on the guitar neck using a simple movable shape. Unlike full chords that contain three notes, power chords are built from just two notes: the root and the fifth. That makes them easy to move, powerful in sound, and perfect for rock, punk, and alternative styles. In this video, I demonstrate how to build the basic power chord shape, how to play both the two-finger and three-finger versions, and how to mute unwanted strings so your chords sound clean—especially when playing through an amp. We’ll also practice moving power chords along the 6th string and 5th string, sliding the shape across the fretboard, and switching between strings to create real rock-style progressions. By the end, you’ll see how this one shape opens up the entire fretboard. As a bonus, I also show how power chords can be a great substitute for difficult bar chords while you’re still building strength and technique. If you want to rock out on guitar, this is the chord you need to know. 🎸 ⏱ What Are Power Chords Chapters: ⏱ 0:00 Introduction – The “secret” chord used in rock music 0:26 What power chords are and why they’re so useful 1:19 Power chord theory: Root and fifth explained 2:04 The basic power chord shape 3:05 Adding the pinky for a fuller sound 4:18 How to mute extra strings for clean power chords 5:20 Practice progression on the 6th string 7:14 Power chords on the 5th string 9:48 Switching between strings 11:24 How power chords work in real songs 11:54 How to practice power chords step-by-step 12:44 Using power chords as a substitute for bar chords ✅ SUPPORT LAUREN'S CHANNEL by purchasing her courses: 7 Level Guitar System: https://www.laurenbatemanguitar.com/c...
