He had squandered his last elite forces on an offensive to recapture the oil fields of Lake Balaton in Hungary, an offensive that went horribly wrong, leaving the capital exposed after the Reich's latest major failure. With barely a handful of men, he was prepared to defend it at any cost. But what is often overlooked is that of that handful of men, several thousand were not German citizens but foreigners, from various European countries, some of which had even been invaded by the Germans in the early stages of the war. But who were these soldiers? What countries did they come from? In which units did they serve? What weapons did they have left? And more importantly, why did they decide to give their lives for a country that wasn't even their own? We will now answer all these questions.
