Italy has surrendered to the Allies. With the fall of the second strongest member of the Axis powers in Europe, the Germans needed to quickly secure their territory to prevent their enemies from easily and, above all, quickly seizing it. Therefore, a general occupation of Italy was planned, giving the Italians the opportunity to remain loyal to the Axis or surrender their weapons. The same strategy was implemented in areas occupied by the Italian army, such as southern France and Yugoslavia. The Germans hoped for the same effectiveness in the Dodecanese Islands, one of the Greek archipelagos in the Aegean Sea. These islands held a significant strategic position, possessing deep-water naval bases and air bases that could jeopardize the German occupation of Greece. Consequently, a German contingent was sent to the distant islands. The last thing they expected was to engage in combat against a large Italian and British garrison that was not about to fall easily. This resulted in a new battle of conquest, where a numerically inferior Germany sought to maintain its territorial ambitions through one of its last distant expansions, which we will now examine.
