El Error en la Batalla del Ebro que le Costó la Guerra a la Republica
The Battle of the Ebro was the largest, longest, and bloodiest battle of the entire Spanish Civil War. In the early hours of July 25, 1938, the People's Army of the Republic surprised the Nationalist troops crossing the Ebro River in a daring offensive designed by General Vicente Rojo. During the first few hours, the Republican success seemed to offer a unique opportunity to change the course of the war. However, the offensive ended up becoming a devastating battle of attrition that consumed the best Republican units and paved the way for the final offensive on Catalonia. Was it a strategic error that doomed that operation and hastened the Republic's defeat? In this episode, we reconstruct the complete development of the Battle of the Ebro, from the spectacular nighttime crossing of the river to the fierce fighting for Gandesa, the Pàndols and Cavalls mountain ranges, and the final retreat of the Army of the Ebro. We will analyze the decisions of Vicente Rojo, Juan Modesto, Juan Yagüe, and Francisco Franco, the role of the Condor Legion and the Legionary Air Force, the influence of the Munich Agreement, and the harsh criticisms of Jesús Pérez Salas regarding the conduct of the battle. A tale of war, strategy, heroism, and tragedy that leads us to the confrontation that, for many historians, decided the ultimate outcome of the Spanish Civil War.
