Friday, Week 12: Swansong - Self-Portrait, Oil on Linen (03/04/2020)
This is it! Neon's last appearance in my palette lol! This week I've been painfully aware of how using such high chroma beautifully disrupts the manner in which I perceive my good old fashion palette. Ahhhgggg!!! I'm not entirely sure how to feel... On the one hand, I'm floored by how much my hue and saturation range are extended, but on the other, I have a feeling that this is temporary. I can't help but feel that unusually high chroma is fashionable. And I'm always going to be open to trying things out and pushing myself as a painter, no doubt about that. There is not an ounce of opposition in my spirit when it comes to new learning experiences. But! There is just something grounded about using a more sobering palette. And I feel that is my life as a whole. This last neon self-portrait is an honest testament of this particular moment, and I'm grateful for giving myself the opportunity for tackling these colors with commitment. But I feel they are like a trip to Vegas... hmmm no, it has to be more gaudy, they're like a trip to Atlantic City. It was an awesome weekend, but your dog is waiting for you back home. Today I pulled out my knife, (that could also apply to Atlantic City but no, I'm talking about my palette knive) and blocked in furiously this sp, thinking about big relationships! I feel this gave me a further understanding of these colors, given that I had only worked with them quite transparently, given their body.
