Der seltsame Fall der Anna Thormälen

On the night of April 5-6, 1875, the Hamburg doctor Dr. Arents was woken up by Anna Thormälen's call. Her husband was feeling very ill and should come with her immediately. At around 4:30 a.m., the two arrived at the Thormälens' apartment, where the maid Emilie Steensen was watching over the bed of the apparently unconscious 33-year-old Theodor Thormälen. He was breathing loudly and gasping with long pauses, but Dr. Arents was unable to wake him. After about an hour of treatment, Dr. Arents left the apartment, but was alerted again around 7:00 a.m. When he returned to the Thormälens' at around 7:30 a.m., his patient had already died. So far, although unusual, it was by no means a criminal case. The case only became one when Anna Thormälen made strange hints to her uncle and shortly thereafter visited Pastor Harms. Did Anna Thormälen kill her husband so she could finally live with her lover, Hermann Schelenz? This solution to the case seems obvious, especially since Anna has confessed. But some people doubt the veracity of Anna Thormälen's statements. Her trial is eagerly awaited...
