Kuk Sool Kwan Hapkido Chair Techniques: Jwa Ki 1-10

Rather than "what to do if you are attacked while sitting in a chair," the Jwa Chi Ki (좌기) are better thought of as a set of drills intended to fine tune the "you won hwa" sensitivity by exploring applications where one's center of gravity is lowered and where one has a stable four legged base. Doing so makes all of one's hapkido skills better, the same way boxing one handed or swimming with a weight belt would. The set also examines the way certain familiar soolki must change because of the fact that the center of gravity is lowered. The Jwa Ki (좌기) techniques are part of the curriculum for brown belt in Kuk Sool Kwan, as taught by the Huh Mon Gil branch at Ancient Arts Hapkido in Irvine, California. The techniques are offered first in fast motion and then in a slow motion with footnotes to guide their proper execution. Together with the Wah Ki 와기 (   • Kuk Sool Kwan Hapkido Ground Defense Grapp...  ) and Yohk Soo 욕수 (   • Kuk Sool Kwan Hapkido Mount Defense Ground...  ), these set of 10 Jwa Ki 좌기 techniques complete the 30 soolki required for the soft side of the brown belt. On the hard side, the Chang Bong Sool (   • Kuk Sool Kwan Hapkido Bo Staff Fighting Te...  ) remain. Kuk Sool was founded in 1958 when the Kuk Sool Hwe first gathered. The Kuk Sool Hwe was a potluck of many martial arts masters who met in an attempt to preserve and share native Korean martial arts material including hapkido and various forms of kung fu. From the techniques shared there, Kuk Sool Won was registered in 1961 and Kuk Sool Kwan was registered in 1962. Kim Woo Tak is the doju of Kuk Sool Kwan. At the time this video was recorded, Grandmaster Michael Dunchok was a 7th dan in the Kuk Sool Kwan and a 7th dan in the Korea Hapkido Federation. Grandmaster Huh Mon Gil, the founder of Kyeok Too Ki and of Korean Special Forces martial arts in 1974 (Teuk Gong Moo Sool), is his teacher.
